What level is my swimmer
Guppy (Parent In Water Assist) Ages 6 months–3 years
Be prepared to jump in with your child as they learn their first water skills and begin building comfort and confidence in the pool! In our ever-evolving Guppy class, children will practice assisted front and back floats, kicking, submersion, and turning to safety.
Parents will also learn important water safety information, including what colors to wear around a pool, what to look for when choosing flotation devices, and proper hand placement to help guide and support their child in the water.
Parents and children will learn and practice these important skills together in a fun and supportive environment!
Level 1: Starfish (ages 3-5) / Seahorse (ages 6-12)
No parents in the water.
This class is designed for children who are learning to swim for the first time. Swimmers will learn to independently float on their front and back in a relaxed position, crawl and climb out of the pool independently, learn proper streamline position, and begin swimming Freestyle and Backstroke independently for short distances.
By the end of this level, swimmers will have built a strong foundation of water safety skills and increased comfort and confidence in the water.
Level 2: Clownfish (ages 3-5) / Swordfish (ages 6-12)
In this class, swimmers will build their independence and begin developing Freestyle and Backstroke skills. Swimmers will learn to swim Freestyle with their head in the water for 5 yards and begin learning proper side breathing. They will also swim Backstroke independently for 5 yards.
Swimmers will practice becoming comfortable in different depths of water by diving down to retrieve objects independently. They will also practice important water safety skills, including crawling and climbing out of the pool, jumping into the water, and swimming back to the wall independently.
Level 3: Sting Ray (ages 3-5) / Squid (ages 6-12)
In this class, swimmers will continue developing their Freestyle by learning proper bilateral breathing and build their endurance to swim 11 yards of Freestyle and Backstroke independently.
Swimmers will also continue learning Elementary Backstroke, including the proper arm and leg movements, and will be introduced to treading water. By the end of this level, swimmers will be able to tread water independently for 5 seconds.
Level 4: Frog (ages 3-5) / Otter (ages 6-12)
In this class, swimmers will continue building their swimming endurance and technique. They will work toward swimming 25 yards of Freestyle and Backstroke, while also increasing their ability to tread water upwards to 30 seconds.
Swimmers will continue to develop their Elementary Backstroke, begin learning Breaststroke arms and legs, and begin learning the Butterfly kick (Dolphin kick). They will also learn how to perform a somersault as preparation for learning the Freestyle flip turn.
There are lots of new skills to learn in this level as swimmers begin transitioning from basic swimming skills into more advanced techniques!
Level 5: Manatee (ages 5-17)
In this class, swimmers will continue developing their four competitive strokes while building their endurance and confidence in the water.
Swimmers will continue learning Butterfly by building on the Dolphin kick and learning the Butterfly arms. They will also learn how to perform the open turn for Breaststroke and Butterfly.
Swimmers will work toward swimming 50 yards of Freestyle with proper side breathing and flip turns, 50 yards of Backstroke, and 25 yards of Breaststroke and Elementary Backstroke, while continuing to build their treading water skills.
Swimmers will also practice important water safety skills, including jumping into the water without goggles and transitioning into a tread. These skills help swimmers become more prepared to respond if they ever accidentally fall into a body of water.
Level 6: Dolphin (ages 5-17)
In this class, swimmers will continue developing their technique, endurance, and knowledge of the four competitive strokes.
Swimmers will learn the Backstroke flip turn, Breaststroke pullout, and Individual Medley (IM) order. They will continue building their endurance toward 100 yards of Freestyle with proper side breathing and flip turns, 100 yards of Backstroke with flip turns, 50 yards of Breaststroke with open turns, and 50 yards of Butterfly with open turns.
Swimmers will also continue developing their treading water and water safety skills. This includes jumping into the water without goggles and treading for 90 seconds, as well as learning to tread without using their hands for 30 seconds. These skills help swimmers build confidence and prepare to respond safely if they ever accidentally fall into a body of water.
Level 7: Great White Shark (ages 5-17)
This is the final level before our hour-long Pre-Competitive Swim Team class. By the end of Great White Shark, swimmers should be comfortable swimming laps using all four competitive strokes, be strong and confident treading water, and have the endurance and skills needed to move into Pre-Competitive Swim Team.
Swimmers will continue building endurance and technique in Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Butterfly, while working on proper breathing, turns, underwater movements, and stroke technique. They will also work toward swimming longer distances and completing the 100 and 200 IM, including learning to properly transition between strokes and perform the appropriate IM turns.
Swimmers will continue developing their treading water and water safety skills. This includes jumping into the water without goggles and treading for 2 minutes, as well as learning to tread without using their hands for 1 minute.
When space is available, this class may be held in the lap pool to provide additional space for swimmers to build endurance.
