What level is my swimmer
Guppy (Parent In Water Assist)
Ages 6 months to 3 years. Be prepared to jump in with your child as they learn the most basic of water skills to help them feel comfortable and happy in the water! In the Guppy (PIWA) level, your child will learn assisted front and back floats, kicks, submersion in the water and turning to safety. Parents and children will learn important safety skills.
Level 1: Starfish (ages 3-5) / Seahorse (ages 6-12)
No parents in the water, a group of children learning to swim for the first time. In this class, students will learn to independently float on their front and back in a relaxed state, will be able to crawl and climb out of a pool without help, will learn the proper streamline position, and start some independent swimming of freestyle and backstroke for a yard. They will end the class with a high comfort level in the water.
Level 2: Clownfish (ages 3-5) / Swordfish (ages 6-12)
In this class, swimmers will learn how to swim freestyle with their heads in the water independent for 3-4 yards and begin to start learning how to side breath (bilateral breathing), swim backstroke impendent for 3-4 yards, being comfortable to dive downwards to get rings (comfort in different depths of water) without assistance, and learning ow to crawl, climb out, jump in, and swim back to the wall for safety without assistance.
Level 3: Sting Ray (ages 3-5) / Squid (ages 6-12)
In this class, swimmers will fully learn how to properly bilateral breath for their freestyle, be able to swim halfway across the lesson pool (11 yards) of freestyle and backstroke, start learning a new stroke – elementary backstroke – by learning the arms and legs (kick is also the kick for breaststroke). Intro to treading water and to be able to tread water for 5 seconds independently.
Level 4: Frog (ages 3-5) / Otter (ages 6-12)
In this class, swimmers will build up endurance to swim across the lesson pool (20-25 yards) for freestyle and backstroke, building endurance to tread water for 30 seconds, continue to master elementary backstroke, begin learning the breaststroke arms and legs, begin learning the kick for butterfly (dolphin kick), learn how to somersault so they can learn how to perform the freestyle flip turn. There are many things to learn in this class.
Level 5: Manatee (ages 5-17)
In this class, swimmers will continue to learn Butterfly by building on the kick learned in the previous class and learning the butterfly arms, learn how to do the open turn for breaststroke and butterfly, building up their endurance to swim freestyle 50 yards with proper side breathing and flip turns, building up endurance to swim backstroke 50 yards, building up the endurance to swim breaststroke 25 yards, and building up the endurance to tread water for 60 seconds.
Level 6: Dolphin (ages 5-17)
In this class, swimmers will learn how to do the backstroke flip turn, learn how do the breaststroke pullout, learn the IM (individual medley) order, continue to build up their endurance to swim freestyle 100 yards with proper side breathing and flip turns, continue to build up endurance to swim backstroke 100 yards with the newly taught flip turns, continue to build up the endurance to swim breaststroke 50 yards with open turns, continue to build up the endurance to swim butterfly 50 yards with open turns, and continue to build up the endurance to tread water for more than 60 seconds.
Level 7: Great White Shark (ages 5-17)
This is the final level prior to the hour-long Pre-Competitive Swim Team class. By the end of this level, swimmers will be able can swim laps in each of 4 competitive strokes. Swimmers will be able to swim freestyle with side breathing and flip turns for 200 yards, backstroke with flip turns for 200 yards, breaststroke with pullouts at each wall and open turns for 100 yards, and butterfly with open turns for 100 yards. Be able to swim both a 100 yards and a 200 yard IM (being able to switch strokes at each wall) and do the proper IM turns. Making sure they use the proper underwater motion for and turns for each stroke and to be able to tread water for longer than a minute.
This class is done in the lap pool if there is space to work on building endurance.
Pre-Competitive Swim Team (ages 6-17)
This is a one-hour class focused on making each of the four competitive strokes legal and swimming each stroke under a required time. Pre-Competitive Swim team, getting ready to join a competitive swim team or if you want a great workout. This class is done in the lap pool.
Prerequisite: Completed Great White Shark or be able to swim the criteria of passing GWS – Swim Freestyle with side breathing and flip turns for 200 yards, Backstroke with flip turns for 200 yards, Breaststroke with open turns and underwaters for 100 yards, Butterfly with open turns for 100 yards, and a 200 IM – and have the endurance to swim for an hour. Total yardage swam in this class can range from 1,700 to 3,000+ for the hour.
Teen Beginner
Teenagers from ages 13-17 can learn how to swim and how to be water safe at The Plex Athletic Club! In the Teen Beginner class, swimmers will learn how to float independently, learn how to swim freestyle with proper side breathing, learn how to swim backstroke, and learn how to tread for a few seconds!
Teen Intermediate
Teenagers from ages 13-17 can learn how to swim at The Plex Athletic Club! In the Teen Intermediate class, swimmers will learn increase their endurance with freestyle and backstroke, learn elementary backstroke, breaststroke, flip turns, and learning their dolphin kick. Teens who are ready to level up from Teen Intermediate will go into Manatee to learn Butterfly and build up their endurance swimming.
Adult Beginner
It’s never too late to learn how to swim and be water safe, The Plex Athletic Club offers swim lessons for Adults as well! In our Adult Beginner Class, swimmers will learn how to float independently, learn how to swim freestyle with proper side breathing, learn how to swim backstroke, and learn how to tread for a few seconds!
Adult Intermediate
It’s never too late to learn how to swim, The Plex Athletic Club offers swim lessons for Adults as well! Adult Intermediate swimmers will increase their endurance with freestyle and backstroke, learn elementary backstroke, and breaststroke! Flip turns, open turns, and Butterfly can be taught after talking to their coach if desired.
